Guatemalan CO-OP 2014
Broadway has been buying coffee from our friends at San Miguel Tzampetey Cooperative for the past 3 years. We were able to visit at the beginning of the 2013/14 Harvest to discover how this small Cooperative was able to produce such an amazing coffee. As we wound up the nicely paved road to the small town 1500 meters above the Lake, it was apparent that something beautiful was happening here.

Adjacent to the Wet Mill, we were able to tour the Cooperative's Education Coffee Plot. Marvin is the Agronomist who assists members of San Miguel with projects relating to soil conservation, fertilizer application, planting new rust resistant varieties of coffee, and farm revitalization. Members live approximately 1-5 miles from the wet mill. Bourbon, Pache, Catuai, and Typica are the four types of coffee grown by members. Marvin is experimenting with a few areas of Sarchimor given to him by ANACAFE. This is not in production. Fran arrived with his daughter carrying the most ripe, red cherries of the day. It took a few minutes to explain to him that I was a Coffee Roaster from the USA. He said I was the first Gringo he'd met at the Mill. We shook hands, and I told him if he brings in coffee like this every year, I'd be back to meet with him again.

San Miguel has experienced Coffee Leaf Rust in many of the members farms. More than half of the 102 members have done renovations to their farms over the past 3 years. It's our hope that we can work with the Cooperative in the future with lot separation, and quality improvement projects based on our tastings and customer feedback from the USA. I'm looking forward to the 2014/15 Harvest!
